Business Must Be Good

Anyone notice the recent advertisement in the Classified section of The (Pottstown PA) Mercury newspaper, in which Sanatoga’s Sunnybrook Ballroom says it needs to hire help? It’s looking for “experienced” servers, attendants and bartenders (that last group must have certificates) to work “various weekday and weekend schedules,” according to the ad. “Good hourly wages,” it also proclaims.

Sunnybrook has events scheduled almost weekly. The Pottstown Home Show, sponsored by the Building Industries Exchange of Pottstown and Vicinity, just finished its run there yesterday (Sunday, March 1, 2009).

New Tenants

The building at 1493 E. High St., Pottstown PA, about a half-mile west of Sunnybrook Road, had been vacant in recent years. It once housed the Daisy Mae dry cleaners and laundry, and then emptied. Everything old is new again, though: a Liberty Tax Service office has opened (just in time for tax season) in the building’s east half, where coin-operated washers and dryers once stood.

There’s a joke to be made here about taxes and laundry, but we’ll be discreet.

In the west half, where the dry cleaning operation was located, a new restaurant featuring a Chinese menu will soon open, according to a hand-made sign seen Saturday (Feb. 28, 2009) in its window.

Ready When They Were

PremiER Urgent Care, the immediate medical care clinic at 450 Cresson Blvd., Oaks PA, opened a little early Sunday morning (March 1, 2009) to both the surprise and delight of its patients.

The clinic, which specializes in providing short-notice and walk-in appointments with a doctor or nurse-practioner, usually is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. But its staff arrived Sunday at about 8:45 a.m., 15 minutes early, and immediately opened the doors to three patients anxiously waiting in cars outside. They seemed relieved.

PremiER also operates clinics in Douglassville PA and Exton PA.

Ride ‘Em, Horsie

Pottstown’s carousel project received renewed and favorable publicity Friday (Feb. 27, 2009) when an article in the Lebanon (PA) Daily News described how a “beloved attraction at a Mt. Gretna PA amusement park in the early part of the 20th century will be the centerpiece of a Montgomery County borough’s downtown.” The attraction is a wooden carousel formerly located in Mt. Gretna’s Kauffman Park, which is now at the heart of The Carousel At Pottstown and Expo Center.

Carousel organization president George Wausnock is quoted extensively, and the article also relates the evolution of the amusement park. Mt. Gretna is 9 miles south of Lebanon, and 62 miles west of Sanatoga village center.
