SANATOGA PA – The K-Mart store in the Sanatoga Village Center remains open for business, at least for now, while others in Norristown PA and Eagleville PA prepare to close by the end of May, Sears Holdings Corp. – which owns both Sears and K-Mart – said Thursday (Feb. 26, 2009).

The retail holding company posted stronger-than-expected quarterly profits after charges were excluded, according to a Reuters news report, but said it would still proceed to close 24 K-Mart stores by mid-spring, in addition to 28 it closed during 2008.

The Eagleville K-Mart store to be closed is located at 3200 W. Ridge Pike., 11.8 miles east of Sanatoga. The Norristown store is located at 2700 Dekalb Pike, 24.2 miles southeast.

Sears Holdings said comparable store sales nationwide declined for the quarter and year across most major categories at both K-Mart and Sears. Declines were sharpest in categories affected by housing market conditions, like furniture and home appliances, and a slowdown in consumer spending on clothing, and home and household goods.

In addition to K-Mart, Sanatoga Village Center also is anchored by the Sanatoga Thriftway supermarket. The plaza was purchased last October for $8.36 million by The Galman Group, a commercial real estate developer based in Delaware.
