The trees are tapped, and the sap will soon be flowing.

One visitor at last year's Green Lane program samples the wares.
Two Montgomery County PA parks programs scheduled for this weekend will show the public, and particularly children, the ages-old secrets in harvesting one of nature’s tastiest bounties. The annual Maple Sugar Festival at the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove will be held Saturday (Feb. 28, 2009), followed by the Maple Sugar Magic presentation Sunday (March 1, 2009) at the Green Lane Nature Center.
Saturday at Mill Grove, 1201 Pawlings Rd., Audubon PA – just 12.4 miles east of Sanatoga village center – takes visitors from the maple tree to the table, describing the Native American beginnings of maple syrup to its modern day production. Maple products also will be available for sale. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and admission is free.
On Sunday at the Nature Center, 1492 Gravel Pike, Green Lane PA – only 12 miles north of Sanatoga village center – the introductory program at 10 a.m. is geared to children ages 3-6. They’ll walk through the sugar bush on a guided tour, taste samples, and hear stories about the business of syruping. The interactive program costs $4, and advance registration is required. For information and registration, call 215-234-8497.
