Saturday night's snow didn't last. The cold did.
SANATOGA PA – Jottings from a reporter’s notebook, in no particular order:
- A tree that’s stood for decades at 1239 N. Pleasantview Rd., in front of what is now the Lower Pottsgrove (PA) Township Municipal Garage, was cut down Friday (Dec. 5, 2008) by township workers. No idea why, but haven’t asked either.
- Township Police Detective Joe Campbell has enrolled in classes at St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia, to obtain a master’s degree in public safety management. Campbell is on the same path taken by his colleague in the department, Det. Sgt. Mike Foltz, who in May was congratulated by the township Board of Commissioners on his graduation from St. Joe’s. Foltz earned his degree with a 4.0 grade-point average, the highest in his class.
- Maintenance crews at the Philadelphia Premium Outlets on Lightcap Road in Limerick, southeast of Sanatoga village, have been outside like clockwork at 7:15 a.m. daily, spreading a salt mixture on icy sidewalks. The bright red rotating spreaders they pilot, and shiver behind, can be seen easily by drivers headed east on U.S. Route 422.
- History lovers will want to look at the newest book by Pottstown author Patricia Wanger Smith. The $30 hardcover, released by Schiffer Publishing on Aug. 28, is titled “Greetings From Pottstown.” It’s a broader, more extensive, and more colorful (literally) review of postcards from the borough and neighboring communities printed in years past, but follows the same lines as Smith’s 2004 paperback, “Around Pottstown.” Local collectors say the book features several postcards they didn’t know existed. Among photographers featured: the Orlandos of Lower Pottsgrove.
- The McDonald’s Restaurant closest to Sanatoga, at 1428 E. High St., Pottstown, is among the franchise’s stores nationwide that last week made a subtle substitution on their Dollar Value Menu for lunch. Before Dec. 1, diners were able to buy a double cheeseburger – two beef patties, two slices of cheese – for a buck. Now the dollar sandwich is known as the “McDouble,” and consists of two beef patties and only one slice of cheese. You’ll pay a little more for that second slice.

US Airways Flight 18 arrived Nov. 26 at Philadelphia International Airport from Unknown. It's what the sign said. Honest.
